Withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, withdrawal of NATO troops from Europe! Foreign troops out of the countries they occupy! Not one penny, not one weapon for this unjust war! Billions for wages, schools, hospitals, not for war! No support for war warmongering governments!”
These are the slogans, translated into all languages, that resounded throughout the world, including in countries where activists, braving war and repression, were determined to take part in these rallies.
And this while, especially in the major imperialist countries, the leaders of the major labour organisations and the main parties of the “Left” persist in supporting warmongering governments. Do they not hear statements to this effect becoming more and more frequent, such as that of NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, who threatened on Norwegian television on 9 December that “the war in Ukraine will get out of hand and turn into a major war between NATO and Russia“ [end excerpt]

These slogans, translated into all languages, resounded throughout the world, including in countries where activists, braving war and repression, wanted to be part of these rallies.
And this while, especially in the big imperialist countries, the leaders of the big workers’ organizations and of the main “left” parties persist in supporting the war-mongering governments.
Do they not hear statements like that of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg threatening on Norwegian television on December 9 “that the war in Ukraine is getting out of hand and will turn into a major war between NATO and Russia”?
The workers, the labor activists of all tendencies, and the youth who gathered on December 9, 10 and 11, indicate to the international working class that there is another way: that of the unity of the workers of the whole world against the war-mongering capitalist governments, under the flag of the fight for a Workers’ International.

Our Bay Area office continues to be a unique organizing center for the progressive movement in the region. One of the challenges we face as we enter the new year is upgrading the office to meet city and state ADA accessibility requirements. We also want to make significant additional changes to transform the space and its usability. Together, these improvements will cost in excess of $25,000.

A look at just some of the events of 2022 make clear what a key role ANSWER plays in the people’s movement in the Bay Area, across the country and worldwide.
ANSWER was a central organizer of the “People’s Summit for Democracy,” June 16-18 in Los Angeles, opposing the failed “Summit of the Americas” orchestrated by Washington. In a major embarrassment to the Biden administration, many heads of state from Latin America and Caribbean refused to attend in protest of the exclusion of Cuba and Venezuela.
ANSWER has been in the forefront of the growing movement calling for an end to the lethal blockade of Cuba, now in place for more than six decades. The blockade was tightened by Trump, with 243 new sanctions which have remained in effect under the Biden administration, causing extreme shortages and suffering among the population.
In late August, ANSWER activists delivered emergency medical supplies to Cuba for the burn victims of a huge oil tank fire ignited by a lightning strike. On Sept. 24, ANSWER provided important logistical and political support to a mass public event at Riverside Church in New York City, addressed by the foreign ministers of Cuba and Venezuela.
From Oct. 27 to Nov. 3, ANSWER joined with others across the country calling for an end to the U.S. blockade and Cuba’s removal from the U.S. “state-sponsor of terrorism” list. Protests coincided with the annual vote by the United Nations General Assembly. The result was 185-2 to condemn the U.S. blockade, with only Israel and the U.S. voting in the negative.
NoneSince the start of the year, ANSWER has conducted public events and webinars on the war in Ukraine, calling for negotiations not escalation, and exposing the U.S./NATO role in blocking a peaceful resolution while fueling the conflict with tens of billions of dollars in weaponry sent to Ukrainian forces.
Viewed by tens of thousands of people nationally and internationally, a webinar titled “Negotiations Not Escalation in the Ukraine War” took place on Nov. 19, cosponsored by ANSWER and The People’s Forum. An outstanding panel included Noam Chomsky, Vijay Prashad, Claudia De La Cruz, Brian Becker, Medea Benjamin, Dr. Jill Stein, Eugene Puryear, and Manolo De Los Santos.
In January, ANSWER joined with the Bay Area Car Caravan for Palestine focused on the attacks on the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem. Marking the anniversary of Nakba Day in May, ANSWER mobilized with many other groups in a “Rise Up for Palestine — Honor Shireen Abu Akleh” protest. Abu Akleh was the renowned journalist murdered by the Israeli occupation force. Joining together with tech workers and several other organizations, ANSWER took part in a “No Tech for Apartheid” march and rally outside Twitter in San Francisco on Sept. 8.
On the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique, in which the U.S. agreed to the “One China” policy, ANSWER joined with Pivot to Peace and several prominent organizations from the Chinese American community in a rally calling for “no new cold war” and “peace, not war with China.” After Nancy Pelosi’s inflammatory visit to Taiwan, both groups held a peace protest at her San Francisco office.
In February and October, ANSWER joined Bay Area protests initiated by the Haiti Action Committee demanding no U.S./Canada military intervention and “France — pay your debt to Haiti!”
ANSWER has continued to demand freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier and all political prisoners, through street protests, letter writing, and support for other actions.
This is far from an exhaustive list of ANSWER’s activities in 2022. In many of the above and other actions, ANSWER has provided sound systems, space and materials for banner and sign-making, and other logistical support to many other organizations.

How can we analyze what happened by taking inspiration from Marx’s method? Marx helped build an organization called the International Workers Association. “It is important to reflect on why The Internationale, the working-class hymn, was sung by the Foxconn workers and by the students in Beijing,” Gluckstein continued, “especially since this hymn, which is the song of workers all over the world, was taken up at the same time in Taiwan.
The meaning of its words is international, because this hymn calls on the workers to revolt against the capitalist system. “If the bonus is not paid, they are justified in standing up to get their due. And there is nothing ‘Chinese’ about that. It is the universal content of the class struggle: workers all over the world are fighting to have their work contracts respected, so that the work they provide is paid for. All over the world, the bosses are fighting so that part of the work is not paid. This is the principle of exploitation. Capitalism is a system, a social relationship in which the bosses, because they own the means of production, are able to impose on the workers to work part of the day to reproduce their labor power and then part of the day for free.” [end excerpt]
